Here are some current literacy statistics in the U.S.:
25 million children in the United States cannot read proficiently
34 percent of children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn how to read
65 percent of children are reading below grade level by fourth grade
37 percent of high school students graduate at or above reading proficiency
